Sarpanch holds `referendum' to assess performance

By Our Staff Reporter

NALGONDA, JULY 19. In an attempt to know the people's pulse on his performance, the sarpanch of Pandenapally in Kattangur mandal, Gaddapati Daanaiah, held a `referendum' in his village and scored a decisive victory on Sunday.

Inspired by the sarpanch of Alagadapa in Miryalaguda mandal, Venepalli Panduranga Rao, who had organised such a referendum on August 17, 2003, Mr.Daanaiah also took up the exercise with the help of the Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV), Human Rights' Forum (HRF), Consumers' Forum (CF) and the Lok Satta. Booths were arranged at the local school for people to cast their vote. The voting and counting process was officiated by the representatives of the above mentioned organisations.

Of the total 728 votes, 500 villagers participated in the polling. While 289 persons favoured his candidature, 209 voters voted against him. Incidentally, he polled more votes than he got in the elections held 35 months ago. Polling started at 7 a.m. and the result was announced at a Gram Sabha at 1.30. Pandenapally wore a festive look on "election eve.''

Thanking the villagers for reposing faith in him, Mr.Daanaiah, a member of the Talangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), told reporters that he would strive hard for the development of the village. "In fact, I wanted to step out of power, if people wanted it, but now they have doubled by onus,'' he maintained.

Apart from Kondal Reddy of the JVV, Subba Rao of the HRF, Guravaiah of the CF and Madhusudan Rao of the Lok Satta, the Alagadapa sarpanch, Mr.Pandu Ranga Rao, was also present at the village during the polling. Mr.Rao appreciated Mr.Daanaih's democratic spirit and congratulated him on his `victory.'
