Work on Perungudi-Taramani MRTS section will be over by May: Velu

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 18. Construction work on the Perungudi-Taramani section of the Mass Rapid Transit System will be over by May, R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways, said here today.

An additional Rs. 12 crores had been sanctioned for the project in view of the problems faced during the construction of the flyover. The columns at a few places hit loose soil and began sinking. The design of the structure had been changed and new columns were being put up. "By May next, we will be able to put the train on the rails," he told media persons here after inaugurating an unreserved ticketing system at Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations.

The facility offers booking of tickets for unreserved compartments three days in advance. Passengers would subsequently be able to book unreserved tickets from any counter in any station in the country.

Soon after the ribbon-cutting session at the Egmore station, Mr. Velu bought himself an unreserved ticket to Melmaruvathur and later issued a ticket for Tirunelveli to a passenger.

Mr. Velu said in the current financial year, the unreserved ticketing facility would be extended to 50 stations in Southern Railway, 13 in Madras Division.

On complaints of deficient broad gauge services between Egmore and Tambaram, Mr. Velu said the services were being improved.
