CHENNAI, JULY 18. The city police have arrested two persons on charges of abducting a civil engineer by posing themselves as Crime Branch personnel. According to a police press release, Kirubanandan's car was stopped by two persons at Thousand Lights on Anna Salai about 10 days ago. The two claimed they were from the Crime Branch and said they had received information that the engineer was possessing unaccounted money. They took Kirubanandan to Vinayakapuram in Madhavaram and took away Rs 2,000, a gold ring and a mobile phone from him. The next day they took the engineer to his office at Triplicane and demanded that he pay Rs.10 lakhs. Mr Kirubanandan told them that he did not have the money in the office, but would get it from his sister's house at Mylapore. When they took him there, the engineer asked the two to wait in the car, but he escaped and went to the police station. When he did not turn up, the abductors abandoned the car and fled the scene. But the police made a computer generated sketch of the two on the basis of the description given by Mr. Kirubanandan. The police said the two waylaid a person a few days ago at the junction of Model School Road-Anna Salai in Thousand Lights and robbed him of a gold ring and Rs 500 at a knifepoint. But they were caught by a patrol vehicle with the help of some members of public. The two then confessed their involvement in the abduction of the civil engineer. Viji of Madhavaram and Kuppa of Peravallur were remanded to custody.
