CBI to take custody of Kohli soon

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA, JULY 18. Maninderpal Singh Kohli, arrested in connection with the rape and murder of British teenager Hannah Foster, will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation within the next three days. He is presently lodged in the Subsidiary Correctional Home in Kalimpong in West Bengal's Darjeeling district after being remanded to judicial custody till July 29.

The CBI which will be taking charge of the case as an executive agency of Interpol, is expected to escort Kohli to Delhi where he is likely to be incarcerated in the Tihar Jail till matters relating to his extradition to the United Kingdom — where the murder was committed — are sorted out.

Speaking to The Hindu over telephone, the Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Rajiv Mishra, said today that a team of CBI officials was expected to be in Kalimpong either on Tuesday or Wednesday. "Kohli will be handed over to the officials once they arrive."

Kohli was arrested by the Darjeeling police from Panighata on Thursday last.

A British police official investigating Hannah's murder, who had arrived in Kalimpong with officials of the Punjab police on Friday, has since left after interrogating Kohli, Mr. Mishra said. "He exchanged evidences with us as we were the first agency to communicate the arrest of Kohli to the authorities concerned," he added.
