VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 18. Cutting across party lines, the Visakhapatnam Zilla Parishad Standing Committee on Sunday okayed a proposal to increase the percentage of funds to be recommended by its members for taking up various works. As part of the formula adopted at the meeting presided by the Chairperson, V. Kantamma, it was agreed to allot sanctioning power for 80 per cent of the funds to the ZPTC members and MLAs. The funds would be distributed equally among the ZPTC members and MLAs before recommending various works while leaving 20 per cent of funds at the discretion of the Chairperson. As per the earlier practice, the Chairperson and the MLAs had powers to sanction 10 per cent of funds (each five per cent) and the ZPTC members half of the total funds routed through the Zilla Parishad. The meeting also resolved to vest the ZPTC members with powers to allot 20 units each under the Centrally-sponsored Indira Awas Yojana (IAY). About 2,700 houses have been sanctioned for the district of which construction is in progress on 756 units in Paderu area. The members, who discussed the agriculture scenario in the district, expressed concern at the delay in sanction of cooperative loans. An official of the District Cooperative Central Bank, who attended the meeting, told the members that they were awaiting orders for rescheduling old loans. The Anakapalle MP, P. Chalapathi Rao, the MLAs, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu, Chengala Venkata Rao, G. Babji, Karanam Dharmasri and Kannababu, attended.
