Arrested cop says he's been implicated

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 18. The arrest of an Armed Reserve constable, Mohinuddin, on the charge of writing threatening letters to balladeer, Gadar, took a curious turn with the former alleging that he was "falsely implicated" in the case by some police officers.

Speaking to reporters after being brought from Warangal to Alwal police station here on Sunday night, Mr. Mohinuddin said police higher-ups did not seem to have confidence in their own men.

He said there was no need for him to write letters to Gadar as he did not know the balladeer. "I do not have enmity with anybody," he said.

Mr. Mohinuddin said there was no time for him to write such letters as he was undergoing treatment from a psychiatrist and was on some tranquillisers. "I am neither a PW target nor worked against them. Where is the question of writing threatening letters?" he sought to know.

He said that there were 50 to 60 constables who were being harassed by Warangal district police officials on similar charges.

He appealed to the civil liberties committees to enquire into his arrest and ascertain facts. Asked if he was ready to undergo any scientific tests, Mr. Mohinuddin replied he was ready for any clarification or test.

The Assistance Commissioner of Police, Alwal, Rama Rao, said Mr. Mohinuddin was arrested after incriminating evidence was collected against him. "His writing tallied with that of the threatening letters received by Gadar. Threatening calls made in June 2003 are also traced to him," he said.

During interrogation, Mr. Mohinuddin confessed to the police that he was opposing naxalites as several of his colleagues had been killed in encounters, the ACP said.

The letters would be sent to handwriting experts for analysis and comparison, he added.
