TIRUCHI, JULY 18 . The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board was formulating a proposal for executing a combined drinking water supply scheme for 529 rural habitations in Vaiyampatti and Kadavur unions in Tiruchi and Karur districts. The project is estimated to cost about Rs.50 crores and would cater to the perennially dry belt in the two districts. The TWAD Board is also preparing proposals for another scheme to meet the needs of 135 habitations in Manikandam union in Tiruchi, the Superintending Engineer, TWAD Board, Tiruchi, R. Rajagopalan, told . Mr. Rajagopalan said that work orders for the execution of a drinking water supply improvement scheme for Musiri, to be implemented at a cost of Rs.1.44 crores, would be issued within 15 days. The ongoing water supply scheme for 98 habitations in Thuraiyur, Thathaiyengarpet, Musiri and Uppilliyapuram unions in Tiruchi district, being executed at a cost of Rs.7.81 crores, would be completed by September. Work on the water supply scheme for 82 habitations spread over Lalgudi, Pullampadi and Manchanallur unions in Tiruchi district and the Perambalur union in Perambalur district has commenced and the project would be commissioned within a year. The scheme is being implemented at a cost of Rs.6.03 crores. Mr. Rajagopalan said that 140 hand pumps have been sanctioned for Tiruchi district under the second phase of the Prime Minister's Handpump Scheme. About 175 handpumps, sanctioned under the phase one, have already been commissioned. About 250 mini-power pumps would be installed in consultation with the authorities and people's representatives. About 180 traditional water sources would be revamped in the district this year, in addition to 165 similar works taken up already. The water sources, which include open wells, were being revamped at a cost of Rs.15, 000 each. Drinking water supply would be provided to about 110 `partially covered' rural habitations in the district. Out of the 2,465 rural habitations in the district, 1241 came under the category of `fully covered' as far as drinking water supply was concerned, while the rest were `partially covered' where the water supply accounted for just about nine to 33 litres per capita per day (LPCD).
