Panel sought to assess teaching

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, JULY 18. A committee of experts is essential to assess the quality of teaching in schools and grade them, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, said here today.

Participating in the golden jubilee celebrations of the K.A.P. Viswanatham Educational Institutions here, Mr. Thangamuthu said the committee should be an autonomous body. Already, for colleges there was the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

He said with many schools coming up, an objective mechanism was essential to look into crucial aspect of teaching quality in schools. The formation of the committee was acceptable to experts, he said, adding that the creation of this body would also help the people. What was essential to students was quality education since school education was a foundation in their pursuit of higher education.

The quality of school education in the rural areas was not up to the mark. There were many schools in the country, which were functioning without roofs, proper toilet facilities and blackboards. There were also schools functioning with a single teacher. There should be a social movement to change this scenario.

Complimenting the K.A.P. Viswanatham Higher Secondary School, he said the school catered for all sections of the society. The school had occupied a special place in Tiruchi, he added.

The Vice-Chancellor unveiled the portraits of the noted Tamil scholar, K.A.P. Viswanatham, and late philanthropist, G. Vishwanathan, and released a souvenir.

Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar emphasised the need for educating the poor sections of the society, which he said was equal to service to God.

The wholetime director of Dalmia Cements, N. Gopalasamy, said as education, character and discipline were equally important.
