Temperature

TIRUCHI, JULY 18. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.1 degree Celsius and a minimum of 25.3 degree Celsius.

Hotel workers' union plea

The Hotel Workers' Protection Union urged the Government to order eight-hour days for hotel workers and fix a minimum salary of Rs. 120 a day.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of the union held here recently demanded regularisation of the services of all hotel workers and extension of Provident Fund and gratuity benefits.

Another resolution wanted the railways to take over all private hotels, fast food restaurants and canteens functioning in the stations in the Southern Railway. The workers should be absorbed as railway staff.

`Kalai Semmal' award

The `Kalai Semmal' award was presented to drama artist, N.T. Duraikannan, at a function organised by the Tiruchi District Drama Artists Association here recently. The programme saw the participation of drama artists in good numbers. The founder of the association, M.S. Mohamed Mastan, proposed the vote of thanks, a release from the association here said.

Woman robbed of jewels

A woman residing near Garuda Mandapam in Srirangam was allegedly robbed of her jewellery at her residence on Saturday night by a group of unidentified persons.

The police said four culprits knocked at the residence of J.Shankar (40), a Southern Railway employee and allegedly robbed his wife, who opened the door, of her jewellery. The Srirangam police have registered a case and are investigating.

Book review programme

The All India Radio, Tiruchi, has planned to broadcast a Book Review Programme in English on July 19 from 8 p.m. to 8.15 p.m.

In the first edition, the journalist, Prema Nandakumar, would review `My Life - Autobiography by Bill Clinton' published by Alfred A. Knopf and `The message of Mahabharatha - The Nation's Magnum Opus' by Justice P. Kondaramayya, published by Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai.

The programme can be heard on Tiruchi Medium Wave channel at 936 khz and 320.5 metres.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in the following areas from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 20 due to maintenance works at the Kambarasanpettai sub-station, according to a TNEB press release issued here recently:

Salai Road, Annamalai Nagar, N.S.B. Road, Super Bazaar, East and West Boulevard Roads, Joseph College Road, Andar Street, Town station, Bapu Road, Sankaran Pillai Street, Chinthamani, Rock Fort and Jeeyapuram.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur dam stood at 72.38 feet today. The inflow was 8,842 cusecs and there was no discharge.
