Govt. urged to improve the lot of Dalits

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 18. Various Dalit organisations have called upon the Central and State Governments to strive for the uplift of the Dalits and ensure that they participated in the development of the nation.

The resolution was adopted by the Dalit Watch - Tamil Nadu, the Federation of Dalit Women's Empowerment, Dalit Panchayat Women Presidents' Forum and Women Development Resource Centre at a seminar on `Lok Sabha election, new secular Government and common minimum programme, towards a new Dalit agenda 2004 - 09' held here recently.

It said the Government should take steps to improve the socio-economic condition of the Dalits.

It stressed the need to provide houses to the poor Dalits in rural and urban areas and establish hostels for Dalit students and employed women. The drinking water sources in the Dalit habitations should be improved and avenues created for the educated Dalit youths, artisans and physically handicapped persons to obtain gainful employment.

Another resolution stressed the need for filling the vacancies meant for Dalits in government offices, and sought the implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in employment and a quota for Dalit women and the minorities in reservation.

To ensure that the people living in remote and far-flung areas did not forego education, the Government should establish hostels and educational institutions in the vicinity and strive for their development.

The programme director of Women Development Resource Centre, Manohari Doss, Edward M. Arockiadoss, Lakshmanan of Chennai, Dassan of Kannanur University, Lourdunathan and Leena Manimekalai participated.
