HYDERABAD, JULY 18. The Divisional Fire Officer of Fire and Emergency Service Department, C. Lakshmi Prasad, has issued the following do's and don'ts for fire safety in the light of serious fire accident in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Do's: Always maintain six metres open space around the school for entry and operation of fire vehicles.
Provide entry gate with minimum 4.5 m width and 5 m height.
Two doors of 1.5 m width and 2 m height for each classroom for every 45 children.
At least two staircases of 1.5 m width if the number of floors is more than two.
Minimum two buckets filled with sand and two buckets filled with water on every floor.
Minimum four water type extinguishers in conspicuous place in every floor.
Water in the underground tank at the rate of 10,000 litres for every 100 m area with minimum 50,000 litres and maximum one lakh litres.
Conduct of fire drill once in every six months/each term to train children in emergency evacuation and plan of action.
Locate lower class children in ground floor.
Train all employees and teachers in emergency plan of action. Don'ts:
Use of thatched roof for any classroom, wooden roofs/ staircases.
Parking of vehicles in the open spaces all round the school up to minimum six metres from the building line.
Allowing of children to go back to classrooms to collect their belongings in times of fire. Use of lift in times of fire. Block of the exits/staircases /doors.
Lock of main gates/entry gates/fire exits.
Panic in times of emergency.
