DYFI activist hacked to death

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 18 . A DYFI activist was killed and another was injured in an attack by a group of assailants, suspected to be BJP workers, at the Jawahar Colony in the Palode police station limits near here late tonight. Dilshad, 25, succumbed to injuries suffered in the attack while Shibu, 26, is undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital. Hospital sources said the two were hack- ed in the leg with swords. They were shifted to the operation theatre for emergency surgery.

The police said the incident was a sequel to an altercation between DYFI and BJP workers over bathing in the nearby river ghat during the `Vavubali' day. The BJP activists had lodged a complaint alleging that they were attacked by DYFI activists.

The police said a group of outsiders were involved in today's incident. Dilshad and Shibu were repeatedly hacked by the assailants who had come armed with sharp weapons.

Attack on toddy

shop: two held

The city police today arrested two members of a gang in connection with the goonda attack on a toddy shop at Arayalloor near Tirumala in the Poojappura police station limits on Sunday. Vinod, 24, and Saji, 20, we- re apprehended after a hot cha- se by a police team led by the Poojappura Crime Sub-Inspector, Subhash Chandra Babu.

The gang had allegedly manhandled the salesman at the toddy shop who refused to pay up protection money, and made away with Rs. 100 snatched from the cash counter. A manhunt has been launched for Gundukad Joy, third member of the gang who evaded the police dragnet. Police said the arrested persons would be produced in court on Monday.

Two arrested

The city police today arrested two persons on the charge of snatching a wristwatch and money from a salesman at Attukal on Saturday evening. A police team led by the Fort Crime Sub-Inspector, Sasidharan, nabbed Anilkumar alias Soju, 26, and Dileep alias Ani, 18, from their hideout. The duo had threatened the salesman, Arun, and relieved him of his wristwatch and cash. The accused were produced in court and remanded to custody.

Police raid: five held

In a massive combing operation across the city today, the police arrested five persons wanted in several cases and registered cases against others for traffic offence and creating public nuisance. The City Police Commissioner, Balramkumar Updhyaya, led the joint operation in which police officials from all stations participated.

As many as five absconding persons involved in several criminal incidents were arrested from various places.

The police registered cases against eight persons for consuming liquor in public places, while 11 more were charged for drunken driving. Cases were registered against 135 persons for negligent driving, while action was taken against 76 persons for creating public nuisance.

The police also raided several lodges in the city and searched 75 persons on suspicion of creating trouble.

Wanted man nabbed

The city police today arrested a 65-year-old man who was wanted in connection with the sale of illicit arrack at Kakkamoola in the Nemom police station limits. The police said Bahuleyan had gone into hiding after a case was registered in his name. The accused was presented in court and remanded to custody.
