`Safety steps inadequate'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 18. The State committee of the Nationalist Students Congress (NSC) has warned that the absence of safety measures in the schools in the State has exposed the possibility of a tragedy similar to the one that occurred at Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu where 90 school children lost their lives in a fire. In a release here today, the committee said hundreds of schools functioning in thatched sheds and dilapidated buildings were flirting with danger. Many of the newly-constructed school buildings had violated building rules and lack basic fire safety measures, it pointed out.

Diagnostic

workshop

Speakers at a diagnostic workshop organised by the Neurology Department at the Medical College here today highlighted the need to develop a telemedicine network in Kerala. The Director of Medical Education, Meenu Hariharan, presented the guidelines of a telemedicine project involving the medical colleges in the State with other institutions. The head of the Department of Paediatric Neurology, P.A. Muhammed Kunhu, explained the modern technique of video EEG to detect epilepsy in new-borns.

No change in examinations

There will be no change in the examinations scheduled to be held on July 19, according to a pressnote issued by the University of Kerala.
