This Day That Age
Closely following the agreement arrived at between the Ceylon Government and the Indian High Commissioner, Mr. C. C. Desai on July 16, the Immigration Controller, Mr. S.K.D. Jayamane, has begun sending out "quit notices" to expired residence permit holders of Indian origin giving them three months' time from the date of receipt of these notices to leave the island. Notices received by a number of individuals on July 18 state, among other things, that their passports were being held by the Immigration Department and would be given to them when they were due to quit the island.
