This Day That Age
The Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai gave a dinner in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chaplin in Geneva on July 18. The dinner took place in Mr. Chou's villa, five miles outside Geneva. No word could be obtained from Mr. Chaplin's sumptuous 16-room villa. Mr. Chou, a great admirer of Chaplin's films, is known to have a considerable sense of humour. Official pictures of recent private meetings in Geneva between him and Mr. Anthony Eden, the British Foreign Secretary, and M. Pierre Mendes-France, the French Premier, have shown him laughing heartily over some jokes exchanged with the two Western Ministers. A Chinese spokesman said Mr. Chaplin was the only foreign guest at the dinner.
