Letters to the Editor
Sir, I refer to the photographs published by The Hindu on the tragedy. Merely warning that it may cause distress to some readers does not neutralise the distress caused. The photographs were printed on the first and last pages. This did not give the readers much choice in the matter.
S.H. Aarti,
Sir, More appalling than the tragedy was the way in which the media covered it. The sight of politicians of all hues posing for the cameras, in particular, amid the wailing crowds, was disgusting.
M.S. Rajasekaran,
Sir, The excesses committed by the American troops in Abu Ghraib would have failed to evoke the kind of protest and indignation they did but for the damning photos. Even the Editor-in-Chief's note (July 17) was not necessary. Photos depicting the Kumbakonam tragedy can and should be ingrained in people's memory.
R. Ganesh,
