Serbia seeks suspect's extradition

Zagreb: Serbia is to request the extradition from Greece on Monday of a suspect in the assassination of the Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, last year. Dejan Milenkovic, a Belgrade underworld figure better known as Bugsy, was arrested in northern Greece late on Friday with a bag full of cash. He went before a special magistrate on Sunday in Salonika. Milenkovic (34), is said to have been a henchman in a plot to bring down the Djindjic Government and restore Milosevic loyalists to power to stave off the transfer of war crimes suspects to The Hague. He was arrested and then released last year a few weeks before Djindjic was gunned down in March, following an earlier abortive assassination attempt. He was said to have been the driver of a lorry which attempted to crash into Djindjic's motorcade. Milenkovic is among 13 people accused of organising or carrying out the murder. He disappeared last year. Greek police detained him on an international arrest warrant after he was identified with the cash, said to be much more than required for personal purposes. The extradition process is expected to be drawn-out.
