DHARMAPURI, JULY 19. A two-minute silence was observed by all government officials in memory of the 90 children who were killed in a school fire in Kumbakonam on July 16, at the Dharmapuri Collectorate today. The officials led by the District Revenue Officer, C. Natarajan, condoled the death of the children. Students from all schools of Dharmapuri also mourned the death. A prayer session was held in the morning in schools. Candles were lit and the National flag flew half-mast in all the schools. in remembrance of the children.
In Erode, to condole the tragic fire accident in Kumbakonam, all the 160 autorickshaws in Dharapuram were off the roads today. In Manickkampalayam, a suburb of Erode, all the shopkeepers downed their shutters in mourning. Several organisations also conducted condolence meetings. College students observed a two-minute silence in memory of the fire victims and then attended the classes.
At Udhagamandalam, grief, which engulfed various parts of the Blue Mountains as news of the tragedy spread, became more pronounced today with various sections of society giving vent to their feelings in a variety of ways.
