Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 19. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today told the Assembly that the Government had proposed to start a corporation to procure Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and redistribute it to wholesale and retail outlets and to shops run by Government-sponsored apex cooperative institutions or Civil Supplies and Agro Industries Services corporations. Responding to a question by V. Vaithilingam (Congress), Mr. Rangasamy said fresh licences had been sanctioned to Amudhasurabi, Pondicherry Agro Products and Civil Supplies Corporation (PAPSCO) and Pondicherry Agro Industries Service Corporation (PASIC) to deal in retail or wholesale IMFL business. A. Anbalagan of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam urged the Government to sanction licences through an Internet-based auction as was being done for the toddy and arrack retail sale. R. Siva of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam said that if the Government could authorise the statutory bodies to run liquor business in Pondicherry why should not such licences be sanctioned for the corporations to run liquor business in the Mahe and Yanam regions. Mr. Vaithilingam said the Government should sanction liquor licences to funds-starved cooperative societies in rural areas. He questioned the practice of obtaining liquor from private companies instead of procuring them directly from the manufacturers. He suggested that the Government itself could start a wholesale corporation to purchase IMFL and redistribute it to the retail outlets. The Chief Minister said there was already a proposal in this regard and welcomed the suggestion of Mr. Vaithilingam.
