Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 19. The Congress member, V. Vaithilingam, today suggested the Government to appoint a political functionary as head of the Pondicherry Textiles Corporation running the Anglo French Textiles Mills. He was participating in a debate in the Assembly on a calling attention motion tabled earlier by the Opposition Leader, R.V. Janakiraman of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,, A.M. Krishnamoorthy of the Bharatiya Janata Party and A. Anbalagan of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on the working of the mill and the need for its modernisation. Mr. Vaithilingam said that it was wrong to say that when a political functionary heads a public sector undertaking there would be no scope for the unit to make profit. The Pondicherry Housing Board and the Civil Supplies Corporation had made good progress and political functionaries or MLAs were heading them now. This view was welcomed by the Leader of the Opposition, R.V. Janakiraman of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who asked the Chief Minister to consider Mr. Vaithilingam's suggestion. R. Siva (DMK) said it would be good if technically qualified personnel were appointed in certain posts in the mill. A. Anbalagan of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam also said that those having qualification in textile sector should be posted in certain key posts. The Chief Minister said only qualified persons were now holding the posts and added that the view of Mr. Vaithilingam would be taken into consideration.
