Govt. urged to retain grants for education

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, JULY 19. Shashil G. Namoshi, MLC, today accused the State Government of initiating discreet moves to impose a cut in the grant-in-aid for higher education in the guise of introducing reforms in higher education.

In a statement issued here today, Mr. Namoshi said the teaching community in the State would not allow any cut in the grants for higher education and wanted the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, who also holds the Finance portfolio, to maintain status quo on the release of grants to higher education. He also asked the Government to permit aided institutions to fill up vacant posts and extend the grant-in-aid to these posts.

Referring to some of the other proposals made in the budget presented by Mr. Siddaramaiah, he said the budget had come as a rude shock to the people of the Hyderabad Karnataka region, as no efforts were made to provide more funds for the region according to the recommendations of the High-Power Committee for the Redressal of Regional Imbalances. This, he said, would affect the development of the backward regions in the Hyderabad Karnataka region.

Mr. Namoshi alleged that the State Government had made a blatant attempt to dilute the demand for the amendment of Article 371 for extending special reservation to the backward regions by announcing that it would send another proposal to the Union Government for the amendment of Article 371 to extend special reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the entire north Karnataka region instead of limiting it to Hyderabad Karnataka.
