The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chairing an all-party meeting on Krishna water issue in Hyderabad on Monday.
KARIMNAGAR, JULY 19. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said his Government will evolve a consensus with political parties on the utilisation of Krishna water even before release of water from the Alamatti project. Talking to newsmen here on Monday, the Chief Minister said that he was hopeful that water from the Alamatti project would be released in next 10 days into State projects. "If we get water from Alamatti we will decide about its optimum utilisation and if we do not get water also, we will chalk out strategies. We will seek opinion of political parties," he maintained. He charged the previous TDP Government with neglecting irrigation projects and also not maintaining minimum drawal levels at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects. Terming the TDP charge on the release of Krishna water from Karnataka meaningless, he said each region had its own problems. "Karimnagar district has its own problem in release of water from LMD reservoir to Medak and Warangal districts. It is a very sensitive issue and we cannot generalise as they (Karnataka) have their own problems," he said. The Chief Minister pointed out: "Just because there is a Congress regime in Karnataka, we cannot get water immediately. Still, in given circumstances, we will pressure Karnataka for release of water.''
Review of PPAs
Reiterating the Government's commitment for review of power purchase agreements (PPAs), the Chief Minister said a three-member committee had been formed to renegotiate PPAs. About lifting of ban on the People's War, he said a decision would be taken in three to four days. To a query about the collection of user charges, the Chief Minister said the Government was remitting user charges amount to all hospitals by making special budgetary allocations.
All-party meet on Krishna
Our Hyderabad Special Correspondent writes: Meanwhile, the Chief Minister convened an all-party meeting on Krishna water here. There was an animated debate on the advisability of Dr. Reddy-led delegation meeting the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. Interestingly, it was the Telugu Desam Party which insisted that the team meet her and seek her good offices to prevail upon the Karnataka Government to release Krishna water from Alamatti. But, the Congress shot it down while the BJP scoffed at the idea. The BJP floor leader, G. Kishan Reddy, said the dispute over water sharing was between two Governments and not between political parties and hence there was no need to meet Ms. Gandhi. The Minister for Major Irrigation, P. Laxmaiah, said the delegation would meet the Prime Minister only. N. Narasimhaiah of the CPI(M), Chada Venkat Reddy (CPI), K. Ramulu (Janata Party) and D.K. Aruna (Samajwadi Party) welcomed the move and hoped the visit would be fruitful.
