CHENNAI, JULY 19. The Pattali Makkal Katchi has demanded that the State Government provide an explanation to the public on what preventive steps it took after the Srirangam fire tragedy. (Nearly 60 persons died in a fire at a marriage hall in Srirangam in January). Urging the Government to come out with findings of an enquiry panel, which went into the Srirangam fire, the PMK leader, S. Ramadoss, asked what was the follow-up action taken by the Government. ``Had proper measures been taken then, the Kumbakonam fire could have been averted,'' he said. Welcoming the Government's directive to remove thatched roofs from schools, Dr. Ramadoss, however, wanted the administration to extend the deadline for replacement of thatched roofs. Criticising the Government for not improving infrastructure of schools in the past three years, Dr. Ramadoss said the administration should create a conducive atmosphere for enabling Lion Clubs, Rotary Clubs, corporate houses and public sector undertakings to adopt schools run by the Government and local bodies.
