NEW DELHI, JULY 19. The Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar for 2002 will be awarded to K.M. Mathew from Kodaikanal and the Chilka Development Authority for ``outstanding and consistent merit'' in the field of environment. Presiding over a meeting of the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar Committee on Saturday for selecting the awardees for 2002, the Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, said the individuals and organisations working at the grassroots should be encouraged to provide an impetus and motivation for making a significant contribution to protect the environment and creating eco-friendly awareness. In the individual category, of the 165 nominations received, Dr. Mathew was selected for his work in plant diversity, environmental research and awareness. He has founded two institutes for environmental education and conservation research, published seven illustrated volumes on the flora of Tamil Nadu, conducted an awareness campaign and trained a large number of people in south India. In the organisation category, of the 81 nominations received, the committee selected the Chilka Development Authority for its outstanding contribution in successful conservation of the Chilka lake eco-system. Constituted in memory of the former Prime Minister, the late Indira Gandhi, the award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs, a silver lotus trophy, a citation and a scroll.
