Kapil backs Azhar

NEW DELHI, JULY 19. Kapil Dev on Monday lent his support to Mohammad Azharuddin by saying that he had every right to earn.

Reacting to the International Cricket Council President Ehsan Mani's statement that Azharuddin should not be allowed to be connected with the game in any way, Kapil said, "everybody has a right to earn and that's what Azhar is doing. You can't stop him from earning and personally I'm not in favour of any ban. It's a long time the issue has dragged its feet and the ICC and the BCCI should sort this issue out soon.''

Mr. Mani had questioned the media accreditation granted to Azharuddin to cover the ongoing Asia Cup in Colombo. The Board President Jagmohan Dalmiya clarified, "we were not involved in granting him any accreditation for the Asia Cup.''

Mr. Dalmiya refused to discuss the Azharuddin issue saying the matter was sub-judice and added "the Board was guided by the CBI report in banning him.'' — Our Special Correspondent
