PERAMBALUR, JULY 19. The `clean village' concept has been launched at Kurumbapalayam in Alathur block near here. The village will have all basic facilities especially toilets. Besides, awareness programmes will be held to motivate the residents to keep their environment clean. Steps will be taken to keep the water bodies clean. Health hazards of open defecation will be explained to the residents. The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, who launched the programme recently, said there were 275 houses in the village, of whom 110 residents had full-fledged toilets. The District Rural Development Agency would sanction a subsidy of Rs.600 to construct a toilet. Any village, which successfully implement the concept, would be eligible for a reward of Rs.5 lakhs. The Project Officer, DRDA, L.Raja, said a sum of Rs.77 lakhs had been spent for the construction of women's sanitary complex in 27 village panchayats. Construction of eight more complex was progressing. The DRDA had released Rs.10 lakhs for the construction of the complex in four villages including Kurumbapalayam. The non-governmental organisations would coordinate for the implementation of the clean village concept. Members of women self-help groups gathered plastic waste materials while students cleaned streets. Elected representatives of local bodies planted saplings to mark the inauguration of the programme. Earlier, the Collector pasted stickers on the walls of houses to create an awareness of the concept.
