Steps taken to remove thatched roofs

By Our Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI, JULY 19. The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, today said that an order had been issued to close those schools, which were functioning without obtaining licence and those that were not registered.

Presiding over an advisory meeting here, he said that steps were being taken to remove thatched roofs from school buildings immediately. Out of 137 high schools and 91 higher secondary schools in the district, 46 schools including 21 higher secondary schools had classrooms with thatched roof.

Out of 1,401 primary schools and 113 nursery schools, as many as 104 had classrooms with thatched roof. Steps were being taken to remove thatched roofs immediately and replace them with non-flammable structures before the end of this month.

A survey would be conducted to ascertain the number of noon meal centres and cycle stands in schools, which had thatched roofs, he said and added that thatched roofs in these places would also be removed. An inspection committee would be formed for this purpose.

The committee would distribute notices to schools regarding the safety measures to be taken up besides monitoring whether those measures were being strictly adhered to or not. The Public Works Department would prepare estimates to set up non-flammable structures in government schools.

The public could inform either the Collector or the Chief Educational Officer in case they came across schools that were functioning with thatched roof.

During the meeting, the District Revenue Officer, V. Shobana, the Chief Educational Officer, V. Rajarajeswari, the District Educational Officers, Chandrasekaran, Venkatasamy, and the District Elementary Education Officer, Rajamanickam, participated.

Later, the Collector and officials observed two-minute silence to pay homage to the school children killed in the Kumbakonam fire mishap.
