Perambalur
By Our Staff Reporter
PERAMBALUR, JULY 19 . A special survey to identify child labourers in this district will be conducted in August, the Collector, D.Vivekanandan, has said. Addressing a meeting on elimination of child labour here recently, he said village panchayat level committees would be formed to conduct the survey. The committee would be led by the village panchayat president and comprise the village administrative officer, the panchayat officer and the head of the school as members. It would ascertain whether compulsory education was being imparted to all eligible school-going pupils in the age group of five to 14 years. It would identify the children who were not admitted to educational institution and employed as child labourers. It would submit a report to the Collector. The Collector said that the District Social Welfare Officer would organise a special surveillance programme in coordination with service organisations to check the menace of child labour among girls. The officer would compile comprehensive data about girls employed as maids and farm assistants. The work would be done in co-ordination with non-governmental organisations and women's welfare associations. On completion of the survey, Revenue and Labour Department officials would conduct surprise inspections at workplaces employing child labour. Strict legal action would be initiated against both the parents and the employers concerned. As per the earlier records, the district accounted for 95 child labourers, he added. The District Revenue Officer, V.Krishnamurthy, was present.
