All-round jubilation in Bhopal

By Lalit Shastri

BHOPAL, JULY 19. There was all-round jubilation in Bhopal today after the news filtered in that the Supreme Court has ordered immediate disbursement of Rs. 1503 crore to meet the claims of the Bhopal gas victims.

The 2004 Goldman Environmental Award winners, Champa Devi Shukla and Rashida Bee, who are also leaders of a trade union of gas affected women, led a victory procession in front of the Carbide plant to celebrate what they described as a "monumental" decision by the Apex court. The Bhopal gas tragedy survivors danced to the beat of drums and there was endless sprinkling of "gulal" (dry colours).

Ms. Rashida said that it is not only the victory of the petitioners but over 500,000 gas victims who shall now benefit from the order.

Ms. Shabnam was among the 36 petitioners, who had filed the writ in the Supreme Court on March 5, 2003. She told The Hindu that she is extremely happy that justice has been done 20 years after the gas disaster when it comes to compensating the gas victims.

Similar sentiments were also expressed by Kamlesh Sharma of Ibrahimganj and Hukumchand Sharma, who lives near the Ashoka Garden Church. Both of them said that the Supreme Court has done justice and the gas victims would now be getting their due.

The founder of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action (BGIA), Satinath Sarangi, who has been in the forefront of mobilising the gas victims, said at a press conference here this evening that the Supreme Court decision is a major victory for the Bhopal tragedy survivors.

He said that there have been irregularities and corruption in the disbursement of compensation earlier. Now, he said, the remaining part of the compensation should go directly to the bank accounts of the victims through account payee cheques.
