CHENNAI, JULY 19. Nearly seven years after coming on transfer to the Madras High Court, Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, elevated Chief Justice of the Uttaranchal High Court, was given a warm farewell here today. Mr. Justice Sirpurkar described Tamil Nadu as a beautiful place and said the senior Bar here was the best in the country. "This place has great culture and has noble thoughts and traditions." He said he felt "enriched by arguments" advanced before him, and commended young lawyers for pursuing their cases with complete dedication. The Additional Advocate-General, R. Muthukumaraswamy, said the outgoing judge exhibited keen interest to learn Tamil. Mr. Justice Sirpurkar heard most of the Prevention of Terrorism Act-related cases emanating from the State. With his transfer, the present strength of the court has come down to 28, against the sanctioned strength of 42. A list of nine names, recommended by the Chief Justice B. Subhashan Reddy, for appointment as judges is pending with the Centre since January.
