Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JULY 19. The construction of 49 social welfare hostel buildings, which are also intended to be used as cyclone shelters, would be completed by the first week of August. Work on the construction of the buildings taken up at a cost of Rs 7 crores in April this year is on at a frenetic pace and if everything goes as per schedule, about 5,000 boarders currently lodged in different dilapidated Government and private premises would be accommodated in the new buildings by August 15, official sources told The Hindu . The move to construct the hostel buildings was initiated by the District Collector, K.Prabhakar Reddy, with the twin purpose of providing hostel accommodation to the students and avoiding huge expenditure being incurred on the construction of cyclone shelters. According to the District Assistant Planning Officer and Minority Welfare Office, K.Siva Sankara Rao, out of the 167 cyclone shelters constructed during the devastating cyclone that hit Diviseema in 1977, only 54 shelters are in good condition.
