CHENNAI, JULY 19. Volunteers of the Friends of Beach Exnora (FOBE) rescued a drowning boy near Odaikuppam off Elliots Beach today. Ganesh (22) from Jagannathapuram, Velachery, who came to bathe with two of his friends, was caught in the strong currents. Kanimurugan and Sriram of Odaikuppam, lifeguards appointed by the FOBE, rushed to the spot on seeing the boy struggling in the water and rescued him, the FOBE president, S. Sathyanarayanan, said. Meanwhile, the lifeguards spotted a dead body 40 feet away from the shore at 1.30 p.m. today and retrieved it. A case was registered with the Sastri Nagar police station. The body was identified as S. Mohanakrishnan, a standard XI student from West Mambalam. He had gone to Kovalam with his family on Sunday afternoon where he was washed away southward. Mr. Sathyanarayanan said on June 22, Kanimurugan and Raja rescued Shankar from Ambedkar Nagar in Washermenpet when he was caught in the waters while swimming. Today's rescue was the 49th successful attempt in the last two-and-a-half years since the FOBE was founded, he said. Four lifeguards in yellow uniform on the Elliots Beach keep a vigil on swimmers from 6 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m everyday. On Sundays and Government holidays, five extra persons from the Odaikuppam slum would join them on the beach front, Mr. Sathyanarayanan said.
