Corporation notice to 20 private schools

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 19. The Chennai Corporation on Monday served notices to 20 private schools in the city to remove thatched roofs and other potentially dangerous structures from their school premises.

The Corporation sources said 19 other schools had voluntarily removed thatched roofs after receiving notices under Section 258 (Precautions in case of dangerous structures) and Section 261 (Precautions against fire) of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919. Thirteen notices were served in the Anna Nagar zone alone.

Condolence meeting

The staff and students of the University of Madras convened a condolence meeting on the Chepauk campus in memory of the students who lost their lives in the Kumbakonam school fire.

The All-India Federation of Lottery Trade and Allied Industries contributed Rs. two lakhs towards the Chief Minister's Relief fund. In a press note, the federation said they were also prepared to take up reconstruction of roofs of five thatched roof schools run by the Government. They had already set aside Rs. 25 lakhs for the work, the release added.

The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor, P. Vetrivel, has written to the Corporation Commissioner to take action to remove the thatched roof structure outside the Gopalapuram residence of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, and the party's youth wing office on Anna Salai.

In his letter, Mr. Vetrivel has urged the Commissioner to issue notices under Sections 258 and 261 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919. He also said the civic agency had issued notice to removal of a temporary structure in front of the late Congress leader Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthy's residence at Sastri Nagar.
