MADURAI, JULY 19. The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, today flagged off a fleet of 50 tricycles meant for garbage clearance work in the Corporation limits. Of the 50 tricycles, 15 will be used in the north zone, 13 in the south zone and 11 each in the east and west zones, an official release said. The tricycles have been inducted in the first phase of a plan chalked out by the Corporation to expedite garbage clearance in narrow lanes. The Corporation will buy 300 tricycles at a cost of Rs. 24 lakhs. The vehicles have been designed in such a way that they can segregate and collect the organic and inorganic waste separately. The release said the Corporation was employing 180 different vehicles such as lorries, dumper blazers, bullock carts, autorickshaws and private tractors for collecting 350-400 tonnes of garbage dumped in 72 wards every day. However, these vehicles could not enter the narrow lanes in many areas. Hence, the civic body decided to buy 300 tricycles, at a cost of Rs. 8,000 each, the release added.
