Temperature

TIRUCHI, JULY 19. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.1 degree Celsius and a minimum of 22.9 degree Celsius.

Demonstration

Members of the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam staged a demonstration here today to protest the arrest of the president of the Thillai Vilagam panchayat in Tiruvarur district, Yoganathan, and local fishermen on the `foisted' charges of destroying prawn ponds in the village. They demanded the withdrawal of all cases.

Their other demands included imposing a permanent ban on the prawn ponds, which damaged the environment, and adequate compensation to the affected farmers.

Fast

Employees of the Airports Authority today observed a fast, opposing privatisation.

The branch secretary of the employees'association of Airports Authority, Santhanakrishnan, led the agitation.

Hearing put off

The district munsif court has postponed to August 4 the hearing of a case filed by three Congress functionaries and a DMK functionary against the Chief Minister, for calling the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, a foreigner, despite a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed her Indian nationality. The decision followed a request by the Chief Minister's counsel.

Condoled

The Tiruchi Bar Association has condoled the death of 90 children in the fire at a Kumbakonam school.

At a meeting held today, the association prayed for early recovery of the injured, and sought an effective enforcement of safety norms by the Government. It also sought action against officials for their `negligence'. The meeting thanked those who donated money for the families of victims.

Bank donates books

The State Bank of India, Palakkarai branch, under the auspices of the bank's Community Services Banking activities donated notebooks worth Rs. 10,000 to 100 poor girl students living in Annai Ashram here recently.

The Regional Passport Officer, Tiruchi, A. Pandurangan, who presided over the function handed over the notebooks to the students, a release from the bank here said.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur dam stood at 73.10 feet today. The inflow was 9513 cusecs and there was no discharge.
