KOCHI, JULY 19. The Cooperative Medical College is awaiting the nod of the Union Health Ministry to admit students for the courses in medicine, though the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations has given the students the option to choose the college in the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) that began in Thiruvananthapuram today. According to the Director of Cooperative Academy of Professional Education, S. Unnikrishna Pillai, it was probably a clerical delay in getting the Ministry's nod. The college is included in the list of medical colleges that the students could opt for during the counselling conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations. "We have intimated officials in the Ministry about the counselling session here and we expect the papers to be cleared as soon as possible," he said. The college is being promoted as an autonomous institution of the Government. The Chief Minister is the chairman of the college and heads its managing committee. The college functions under the Department of Cooperation. After inspecting the college last month, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had recommended to the Ministry to grant permission to admit 100 students to the current academic year. The college was not given permission to admit students for the last two years owing to lack of infrastructure and facilities. The college bagged the approval of the MCI after the college and hospital were shifted to the new premises where facilities for teaching, laboratory work and surgery were available. It was decided at the managing committee meeting of the college held on Sunday, that the college and hospital would be formally inaugurated by the end of August.
