COIMBATORE, JULY 19. Hailing the decision of the Government to come down heavily on schools having thatched roofs in the wake of the Kumbakonam fire mishap, the Coimbatore Bar Association has urged the Government to initiate an action plan to make schools safer. The meeting of the Coimbatore Bar Association was held today. It also condemned the school management and the staff for their "irresponsible and selfish attitude." .In a memorandum to the Government, the president, K. Shivashanmugam and Secretary, R. Chellimuthu, pointed out that removal of thatched roofs alone would not prove to be a permanent solution and called for removal of all dilapidated old structures and dead trees located close to the class rooms. Efforts should also be taken across the State to ensure that kitchens and power cabins were located away from classrooms and play space. Where schools had dilapidated buildings they must be renovated with the help of MPs Local Area Development Fund and MLAs constituency development fund, they said. The incident should be an eye-opener to ensure that all schools had broad passage and carriage-way around for rescue measures in the event of a mishap and all class rooms should have broader and wider entry and exit doors.
