BHEL (EPD) takes trophy

BANGALORE, JULY 20. BHEL (EPD) `shot out' Oriental FC via the tie-breaker to win the Jagadheeswarachar Memorial Cup football tournament. At the football stadium here on Tuesday, the two teams were tied goalless at regulation time and in the tie-breaker, BHEL's custodian Chakra turned hero saving two efforts to enable his team prevail 4-3.

This was the second time that BHEL (EPD) has emerged champion having won in 2002. The tournament was not played last year for varied reasons.

In the regulation period both teams did have a few sharp chances but frittered it away with hasty attempts. In the tie-breaker, BHEL's Vinod, voted `the best player of the tournament', was guilty of sending his shot wide while Ramesh, Damodaran, Dinesh and Sathyaraja converted.

For Oriental, Ahmed Hussain, Rama Rao and Sridhar were on target while Raja and Ravindra found their attempts being saved by Chakra.

The following were awarded special prizes: Player of the tournament: Vinod (BHEL); best midfielder: John (Mohd. Sporting); best defender: Raja (Oriental); best striker: Damodaran (BHEL); best goalkeeper: Thulasi Ram (HMT) and best team: National FC.
