Three farmers commit suicide

CUDDAPAH: Two farmers steeped in debts ended their lives in Cuddapah district on Monday evening. A 50-year-old farmer, Somula Krishna Reddy, of Sannupalle village in Khajipet mandal, who incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs, died after consuming sleeping pills in his fields, police said. B. Sivarami Reddy (38) of Kallutla village in Mylavaram mandal, who had incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs ended his life by consuming pesticide.A cotton farmer, Dasari Venkateswarlu (45), committed suicide by consuming poison in his house in Kakarla village under Julurpadu police station limits in Khammam district on Tuesday. Pests had ravaged his crops two years ago and he could not repay his debts.

Mixed response to PW bandh

WARANGAL: The first bandh call given by the People's War (PW) after it agreed for talks with the Government evoked a mixed response in the district on Tuesday. While a majority of educational institutions were closed, banks and Government offices functioned amid tight security. The RTC did not operate rural services. The PW called the bandh in protest against the Oddegudem incident in which a covert, K. Brahmachari alias Laxman, killed two of his comrades.

Quota in promotions sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes (BCs) Welfare Association on Tuesday urged the Centre to provide reservations for BCs in promotions. In a representation to the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Meira Kumar, in New Delhi, R. Krishnaiah, president and other leaders, who are in the national capital as part of the `Chalo Delhi' programme, also sought reservations in Central educational institutions and creation of a special department for BC welfare at the national level and to increase the income limit from Rs.2.5 lakhs to Rs.4 lakhs for eligibility under the creamy layer.According to a press release issued by the association here, the leaders submitted memoranda to the Union Ministers -- Lalu Prasad, Ram Vilas Paswan and S. Jaipal Reddy -- and 20 MPs seeking their intervention to ensure that the Government acted on their demands.

Aided college lecturers' plea

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Aided Degree College Lecturers' Association on Tuesday appealed to the Government to exempt aided college lecturers from national and State-level eligibility tests and allow them to draw the University Grants Commission pay scales by amending G.O. Ms. No. 11. M. Yadagiri, general secretary, at a press conference here sought regularisation of services of 360 part-time/temporary lecturers who had completed five academic years as on date. He also wanted payment of salaries regularly to aided college.

Salary arrears for workers

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday promised representatives of the Non-Muster Rolls (NMR) Daily Wage Employees' Federation that steps would be taken to ensure immediate payment of salary arrears to them. The Government would also evolve a policy on regularisation of their services. Leaders of the federation said workers were facing hardships as salaries were not being paid regularly to them. They demanded regularisation of services of the staff, extension of service conditions to them and payment of salaries in the first week of every month.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh committee of CITU on Tuesday urged the Government to protect dairy firms in the cooperative sector which were facing a crisis. A delegation of the CITU submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Animal Husbandry, G. Surya Rao, seeking implementation of the Milk and Milk Products Order, which paved the way for barring private dairies from procuring milk in areas where cooperative firms were operating.

Five-year extension sought

HYDERABAD: A delegation of part-time lecturers of S.N. Vanita Maha Vidyalaya on Tuesday represented to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to regularise their service after extending the cut-off date of G.O. Ms. No.328 from November 25, 1993, to November 25, 1998.

The lecturers, in a press release, said a few of them were not covered by the GO as they were falling short of a few months of service despite putting in 13 to 15 years of service by now. The release said the step would not be a burden on the Government as the number of part-time lecturers was only a few. It sought early action on the demand as the lecturers had already lost many years of service.

Sops' shower for Somayajulapally

Hyderabad: The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's recent visit to Somayajulapally village of Orvakal mandal in Kurnool district resulted in the sanction of a protected water supply scheme, 100 houses under Indira Awas Yojana, cement concrete roads and drains and upgradation of upper primary school into a high school. The Collector of Kurnool district, Ajay Jain, conveyed this to the Chief Minister's Office on Tuesday. According to him, estimates for a minor irrigation tank sanctioned were also being prepared. In all, 51 families have been identified for sanction of an additional Rs.50,000 from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

TDP flays Union budget NEW DELHI: The Telugu Desam Party today criticised the Union budget in the Rajya Sabha, saying thatthe allocations did not reflect the Government's avowed commitment to the cause of farmers. Calling the budget a "packaging masterpiece,'' C. Ramachandraiah said the Finance Minister's assurance about doubling credit availability for the rural sector was unlikely to be realised.

Bobbili records 6 cm rainfall

Hyderabad: Bobbili in Vizianagaram district received 6 cm of rainfall on Tuesday. There was isolated rain in coastal Andhra while weather was mainly dry in Telangana and dry in Rayalaseema. Prattipadu, Rajahmundry and Rapur received a rainfall of 2 cm each and Bhimadole, Dowlaiswaram and Veeraghattam 1 cm each.

Isolated rain/thundershower is likely in the State on Wednesday.

Panchayat member ends life

ADILABAD: Daraka Venkati, 20, member of Jainad village gram panchayat from Ward number 4 committed suicide by consuming poison on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday. In a letter left behind, he said that he was taking the extreme step due to family problems. A case was registered and investigation was on.

CM's effigy burnt

ADILABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party activists on Tuesday burnt an effigy of the Chief Minister Y. S. Rajashekhara Reddy, on the busy National Highway in front of the bus stand, protesting against the provision of 5 per cent reservation for Muslims. The BJP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morch workers led by M. Ramana Reddy, Adilabad constituency party in charge, Pandit Rao, BJP district vice president, Uday Kumar, State executive member of BJYM, and G. Vijay Kumar, BJP Town president, raised slogans against the Chief Minister.

Farmers' rally

ADILABAD: About 100 farmers of the tribal belt in Talamadugu mandal on Tuesday took out a silent rally carrying banners demanding waiver of crop loans in view of the crop failure and seeking fresh loans. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Collector, Vikas Raj. The farmers from Cherlapally, Jhari and Poonaguda said the seed which, they had sown had failed to germinate due to prolonged dry spell.

Sports scholarships

KARIMNAGAR: The district sports development officer, J. Saraiah, has invited applications for sports scholarship for the year 2004-05 from sportspersons who have secured medals at national, State, university and senior national competitions between April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2004. Application forms should be submitted to the Executive Director, Sports Authority of India, NIS, Patiala, on or before September 30 this year.

KARIMNAGAR: G. Krishna Kumar Reddy of Sri Sai English medium school, Kisan Nagar, and M. Karthik of Vivekananda Vidyanikethan High School, Bagathnagar, Karimnagar, have been selected to participate in the State-level selections for admission into fourth class in the AP Sports School, Hakimpet, Hyderabad. The district Sports Development Officer, J Saraiah, said that the State-level competitions would be held from July 22 to 24 at the AP Sports School in Hyderabad.

Rain lashes three mandals

CUDDAPAH: Heavy rain lashed Rayachoti, Lakkireddipalle and Ramapuram mandals last night resulting in damage to groundnut and sunflower crops, snapping of electric wires, uprooting of trees and collapse of thatched houses.

Tin roofs of H.M. Degree College in Rayachoti town and several huts were blown away and power supply was disrupted all through the night. Several thatched houses were damaged in Pothukuripalle, Muthukurupalle and Bandapalle Harijanawadas in Ramapuram mandal.

Bar association office-bearers

CUDDAPAH: A senior advocate, B.A. Kumar, was re-elected president of Badvel Bar Association on Tuesday defeating his rival candidate, Chandrasekhar Reddy, by four votes in the elections held at Badvel. The others office-bearers were: vice-president - Dhanaraj Bhaskar, general secretary - K.C. Prabhakar, joint secretary - Sridhar, treasurer - Ravi Kumar and co-treasurer - Gopal Reddy.

Civic body meet on July 24

NELLORE: The general body meeting of the Nellore municipality, to be held here on July 24, is likely to be a stormy one considering the controversies plaguing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led civic body.

Meanwhile, a workshop for panchayat secretaries will be held at the Velugu meeting hall on Wednesday.

TIRUPATI: The Directorate of Distance Education of Sri Venkateswara University has announced that the PG first year examination, scheduled to be held on July 21 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., will be conducted between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Also, the last date for payment of fee (without fine) for the B.Ed examinations, scheduled to commence on August 21, is fixed as July 26.

3 held in raid on theatre

TIRUPATI: Three employees of a local theatre were arrested for screening a pornographic film on Tuesday.

The police, led by the Deputy SP, K. Thimmappa, raided the theatre falling under the Tirupati East police limits. The operator, Damodar Naidu, the manager S. Damodar, and another employee, Durgaprasad, were arrested.
