CHENNAI, JULY 20. Tamil Nadu "is an ideal destination for German investment in India," the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, told the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Joschka Fischer, today. Mr. Fischer, accompanied by Heimo Richter, FRG Ambassador in New Delhi; Johann Heinz Kopp, Consul-General in Chennai; and Walter Lindner, Chief Spokesperson, called on her at the Secretariat, an official release said here. Emphasising that Tamil Nadu provided "the best investment climate with perfect maintenance of law and order, best industrial relations and world-class human resource," Ms. Jayalalithaa welcomed investments by German auto majors, manufacturing and engineering industries, as the State "is the home of manufacturing in India." Besides being ahead in human development with genuine progress in social sectors, it was an "enchanting tourism destination and would be a major attraction to German tourists as they can fly directly from Frankfurt to Chennai", she said. The Chief Minister highlighted the strong ties between Germany and the State as Chennai had one of the oldest Max Muller Bhavans. It was with German investment and technology that the Neyveli Lignite Corporation had grown into a major electricity-generation company, she said pointing out that Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd. expanded its capacity with technology from Voith Paper of the FRG. The Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, had grown with German support, she said. Expressing his happiness "at being able to see for himself the wonderful progress" made by the State, Mr. Fischer appreciated the steps taken by the Chief Minister for "making Chennai a beautiful green city." As a leading State, Tamil Nadu would increasingly figure in Indo-German ties, he said.
Calls on Governor
The FRG delegation led by Mr. Fischer called on the Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, at the Raj Bhavan this morning. It comprised Volker Stanzel, Director-General for Political Affairs, Mr. Richter, Mr. Kopp and Mr. Lindner, according to a Raj Bhavan release.
