BANGALORE, JULY 20. The 10 per cent service tax on transporters of goods by road, announced in the recent Union Budget, has been opposed strongly by the Karnataka Goods Transporters' Association, the Bangalore City Lorry Transport Agents' Association and the Federation of Southern States Goods Vehicle Owners' Associations. Representatives of these organisations told presspersons here today that the levy showed that the Government continued to discriminate against private road transporters. The Government was already supplying diesel at subsidised rates to the Railways while the State Budget had hiked the tax on diesel. While the Railways did not have to cope with traffic delays or meet the demands of Police Transport, Commercial Tax and other departments, the road transport sector had to incur additional expenses, they said.
