BANGALORE, JULY 20. Fifty two-year-old Narayanappa's breathing trouble was almost taken for asthma, a common ailment in Bangalore. However, doctors at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Heart Centre found out in time that it was more serious and managed to save his life, minus surgery, which would have been difficult. A resident of R.T. Nagar and a State Government employee, Mr. Narayanappa had just recovered from a heart attack two months ago. He had been operated upon for a narrow aortic valve in the heart, which was also leaking profusely. After he returned home, Mr. Narayanappa started experiencing difficulty while breathing. It became very difficult for him to breathe while lying down. When he came to the hospital, the doctors found he was suffering from "stridor," a condition indicating the narrowing of the windpipe (trachea). After discussing the case, Mukundan, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon, R. Keshava, senior cardiologist, and Shama Rao concluded that Mr. Narayanappa needed "Balloon tracheoplasty of stenosis" to avoid the complications of a surgery, which would have been dangerous for his heart. Under this procedure, a series of balloons were inserted into the windpipe to broaden it. Within a few days, the patient's condition improved dramatically, the doctors said.
