Students' interest will be protected, says Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 20. The Higher Education Minister, D. Manjunath, said in the Legislative Council today that the Government intended to conduct fresh counselling for students who were seeking admission to professional courses, after the Supreme Court directed that seat sharing between the Government and private managements should be in the ratio of 50:50. Replying to Vimala Gowda (Bharatiya Janata Party) during Question Hour, Mr. Manjunath said the Government was taking steps to protect the students' interests. Talks were being held with the professional colleges, and he had meetings with the managements of medical, dental and engineering colleges.

M.P. Nadagouda (Janata Dal-U) said since it was reported that Justice A.M. Murgod had resigned as chairman of the fee-structure committee, the House must discuss the issue of fees. The acting Chairman, V.R. Sudarshan, suggested that the matter was serious enough to warrant a half-hour discussion. But when Opposition members said that would be inadequate, he said he would allow a discussion under Rule 62.
