VILLUPURAM, JULY 21. The Villupuram Collector, Ka. Balachandran, today disclosed that he had received complaints that dealers in asbestos and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes had abnormally increased the prices of their products. In a statement issued here today, Mr. Balachandran warned that stringent action would be taken against those trying to capitalise on the State Government's direction that all the educational institutions should go for non-flammable structures within a stipulated time. The Collector noted that after the Kumbakonam school fire, efforts had been made on a war-footing to remove thatched roofs in all the schools in the district. Therefore, anticipating huge demand, certain unscrupulous traders seemed to have inflated the prices. Mr. Balachandran said the dealers should sell these materials as per the price list and should not indulge in profiteering at this crucial juncture.
