Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 21. With the Planning Commission not conceding the plea of the Pondicherry Govenment for inclusion of its proposal to pay relief to unemployed youth in the five year plan, the proposal had to be dropped for now, the Health and Labour Minister, E. Valsaraj told the Assembly today. Replying to a call attention motion tabled by A.M. Krishnamoorthy (BJP) and R. Siva (DMK), Mr. Valsaraj said the Union Territory government had sought inclusion of the scheme to pay relief with a token provision of Rs 5.88 crores by the Planning Commission in the 9th Five Year plan (1997-2002). But the Planning Commission had rejected the proposal and hence the government could not sanction the relief now. Earlier members wanted payment of relief ranging between Rs 200 to Rs 500 to the educated unemployed during their period of unemployment. The payment could be restricted to graduates or post graduates who had registered their names with the Employment Exchange and were waiting for jobs, the members suggested. The Health Minister also listed the steps taken to provide jobs through the Employment Exchange.
