Gujarat expands scope of Nanavati panel

By Manas Dasgupta

GANDHINAGAR, JULY 21. The Gujarat Government has expanded the scope of the terms of reference of the Nanavati-Shah judicial inquiry commission, giving it the authority to inquire into the role of anyone, including then Chief Minister and other Ministers, in connection with the Godhra train carnage and the post-Godhra communal riots in the State.

The two-member commission comprising the retired judge of the Supreme Court, G.T. Nanavati and retired judge of the Gujarat High Court K.G. Shah, was constituted soon after the riots to probe into the circumstances leading to the train carnage on February 27, 2002, and the subsequent incidents of communal violence in various parts of the State the same year. After a couple of extensions, its term is scheduled to end in December this year, unless further extended by the State Government.
