TDP stages walkout

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JULY 21 . Members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) staged a walkout in the Assembly on Wednesday, protesting that farm credit in the State was unavailable despite the Government "waxing eloquent" on the welfare of farmers.

The Minister for Cooperation, K. Lakshmi Narayana, told D. Umamaheswara Rao of the TDP during question time that a credit plan of Rs. 2,200 crores for 2004-05 was already under implementation. Besides, Rs. 300 crores had been planned under long-term credit, she said. Members of the TDP disputed the "rosy picture" painted by the Minister, saying the situation at the ground level was different. The Government was neither implementing the latest NABARD guidelines that provided for liberal loans, nor had the guidelines been circulated at the primary society level, they said. They demanded a Government Order for the waiver of interest according to these guidelines.

T. Devender Goud of the TDP complained that the mike at the Telugu Desam benches had been switched off. When handed the mike, he said the sum of Rs. 700 crores that the Minister had claimed to have disbursed was a "book adjustment" and, continuing the protest, led his group out.
