HYDERABAD, JULY 21. Replying to the two-day debate on drought situation in the State on Wednesday, the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, announced that a legislation to bring in changes in the Seed Act would be introduced during the current session. If this was not possible, an ordinance would be promulgated, he said. For the first time in the country, a person in Guntur district, Jyoti Reddy, was arrested under the PD Act and sent to the Rajahmundry Central Jail for selling spurious chilli seed. About 160 kg of seed worth Rs.32 lakhs was seized from him, the Minister said. During the last two months, spurious seed valued at Rs.7.6 crores was seized in the State. Officials, he stated, were instructed not to spare anyone, indicating the Government's seriousness in tackling the issue. Mr. Reddy asserted that there was no shortage of seed and said 7.6 lakh tonnes was ready with the Government.
