Glorious day for Misra

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 21. Keshav Misra etched his name in the record books with a lowest-ever score by an amateur — nine-under-par 63 — when he went on a birdie binge despite opening his round with a bogey, in the second round of the Northern India Open amateur golf championship at the Army Golf Course here on Wednesday.

"I just tried to stay aggressive after a modest opening round,'' said Misra of his sublime performance.

The amazing round of 63 was studded with 10 birdies as Misra also bettered the course record. Jaskirat Singh Dullet, on the IGU Junior circuit, had set the course record of seven-under. On the senior amateur circuit, six-under was the lowest card recorded by several players.

Misra, who represented the country in the Busan Asian Games in 2002, opened a good six-stroke lead over the overnight leader Jagmohan S. Gill. Misra had an aggregate of eight-under 136, while Gill was at 142 after he posted a level-par round on Wednesday.

The bogey on the par-four 10th seemed to have spurred Misra. He missed a two-foot par putt but then he changed the entire course of the scoring. Misra made six regulation birdies in a row and took the turn at five-under.

On the home stretch, Misra had birdies on the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth holes.

The scores:

Keshav Misra (73, 63) 136; Jagmohan S. Gill (70, 72) 142; Simarjeet Singh (70, 73), Vikramjit Singh (74, 69) and Vikrant Chopra (71, 72) 143; Ranjit Singh (76, 68) 144; Arshpreet Singh Thind (76, 71), Gagan Verma (74, 73), Gaganjeet Bhullar (75, 72), Kapil Dev (75, 72) and Rajeev Kumar (73, 74) 147; Sandy Lehal (75, 73), Ajay Singh (78, 70), Manav Das (73, 75) and Vikram Rana (75, 73) 148; Chirag Kumar (76, 73) and H. S. Kang (76, 73) 149.
