GULBARGA, JULY 21 . The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has called for a Statewide college bandh on July 29 against the cut in grants for education in the State Budget and the "indifferent attitude" of the State Government in solving the issues related to admissions to private professional colleges. The secretary of the State unit of the SFI, Ramakrishna, told presspersons here today that the Budget proposals to cut allocations for education had come as a shock to the people of the State. He pointed out that the previous Government had reduced the allocation to education from 17 per cent to 13.9 per cent and the present Government had further reduced it to nine per cent. He accused the Government of doing nothing to solve the controversy over admissions to professional courses. The Government should come forward to pay the extra fees prescribed for students aspiring for medical, dental, and engineering courses in private colleges, he said and added that the Government should pressure the Centre to enact legislation annulling the Supreme Court judgments on admissions to professional courses.
